Water Hole

hole-in-the-water

Sometime, when you’re feeling important!

Sometime, when your ego’s in bloom;

Sometime when you take it for granted

You’re the best qualified in the room;

Sometime when you feel that your going

Would leave a unfillable hole,

Just follow these simple instructions,

And see how it humbles your soul.

Take a bucket and fill it with water,

Put your hand in it, up to the wrist;

Pull it out, and the hole that’s remaining,

    Is a measure of how you’ll be missed.

You may splash all you please when you enter,

You can stir up the water galore,

But stop, and you’ll find in a minute

That it looks quite the same as before.

The moral in this quaint example;

Is do just the best that you can;

And be proud of yourself, but remember

There’s no indispensable man.

Sometimes we may think that we are the best at what we do, but we should always remember to be humble, and that there is always going to be someone who comes along that may be better.  I think that’s good advice to just do the best we can and let the cards fall where they land. Doing your best is all you can do, and being too proud of oneself always has a downside in the end.

    The upside of remembering that we are not “indispensable” is also good. It takes the pressure off to stay when we have to leave, to step back and let others do the task, and so on. It’s not all about us. Nice post, Tony. 🙂
