The great coffee company has author Herman Melville who wrote the 1000 page classic novel Moby-Dick to thank for their Starbucks name. Starbucks takes its name from Starbuck who was the first mate on board the ship Pequod under Captain Ahab. As a matter of fact the company was almost named Pequod. I suppose they didn’t want to name it for second mate Stubb or third mate Flask although Flask has some similarity to a coffee cup.
Starbucks sells a whopping 2 billion cups of coffee a year and you can add my wife to the mix of this coffee frenzy. Her favorite drink is a “Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte Non-Fat Milk Hot Whipped Cream “. I suppose Starbucks can sell coffee at such high prices since the names are so long. She tells me it is more than coffee, it is a coffee experience and her buddies treat her right at Starbucks. I suppose there is something to that. What is a Barista by the way?
I have to admit though that I am not a coffee fan and have never drank a cup of coffee in my entire life. I tasted it once when I was younger but never developed an affinity for it. I can’t stand coffee really. I do like hot tea, but I run the other way when someone offers me a cup of coffee. It is probably a good thing since if my wife and I both were drinking Starbucks we would not have any extra money left over at the end of the week.
Starbucks must be doing something right to be in 19,000 locations in sixty different countries and to be able to charge $5 per cup of coffee!
